Mark Schauer’s votes and proud, public support for massive cuts to public schools and Michigan students include:
$130 MILLION CUT FROM MICHIGAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS—On December 18, 2003, Schauer voted to cut nearly $100 per student from the school aid fund, cut $22 million in state funding for school technology and cut $1 million from adult learning. $330,000 CUT FROM PUBLIC SCHOOLS & $85.6 MILLION CUT FROM HIGHER ED & COMMUNITY COLLEGES—On December 10, 2003, Schauer publicly backed Jennifer Granholm’s executive order to cut $330,000 in K12 education spending, cut $12.43 million from Community Colleges and cut $73.17 million from the state’s higher education budget. On September 30, 2005, Mark Schauer also voted to cut funding for 11 of 15 Michigan universities. (The Associated Press, September 30, 2005)
$18.5 MILLION CUT FROM MICHIGAN SCHOOLS & STUDENTS—On September 8, 2004, Schauer voted to cut $14 million from Intermediate school districts, forcing them to cut cost-saving and resource-sharing education programs. He also voted to cut $4.5 million from Merit Award Scholarships earned by hardworking Michigan high school students. (The Associated Press, October 1, 2004)
$64 MILLION CUT FROM MICHIGAN STUDENTS—On February 2007, as Senate Minority Leader, Mark Schauer publicly backed Jennifer Granholm’s proposed budget cutting $58 million from college students and $6 million for libraries, where students study, research and learn. (The Detroit News, February 9, 2007)
$82 MILLION CUT FROM HIGHER ED—On March 22, 2007, Schauer stood with Jennifer Granholm at a press conference to announce and champion $82 million in budget cuts to state colleges and universities. (The Associated Press, March 22, 2007)
$10 MILLION CUT FROM HARD WORKING STUDENTS—On December 2008, Schauer publicly backed a Granholm executive order that cut $10 million from Michigan Promise Grants—breaking a promise and stealing $4,000 per student from high school students who worked hard to earn the opportunity to go to college after graduation.
