Michigan Only State in the Midwest with Restrictions Still in Place

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Freedom Fund Executive Director Tori Sachs today challenged Governor Gretchen Whitmer to end Michigan’s burdensome, unnecessary COVID restrictions immediately.

Michigan is the only state in the Midwest that continues to impose unilateral pandemic restrictions on its residents. Many of the state’s remaining restrictions are set to expire on July 1. The New York Times reported yesterday that “most states have gone back to business as usual.” Whitmer remains unwilling or unable to provide the science or the data behind the selection of July 1, or what may be guiding her decision to reopen sooner.

“Governor Whitmer should end every last one of her unilateral, worst-in-the-nation COVID restrictions today,” said Sachs. “It becomes clearer by the hour that the Governor is hamstringing workers, families and businesses on a whim, without a shred of specific science or data to guide her.

“It’s not a surprise or a coincidence that Michigan’s COVID recovery is 51st in the nation. It’s the result of Gov. Whitmer’s never-ending restrictions. It’s time for them to end immediately.”
