Whitmer Campaign Attorney at Center of Campaign Finance Irregularity Scandal

Michigan Democratic Party Agrees to Pay $500,000 Fine, Among Largest Ever Levied by FEC, Over Irregularities on Mark Brewer’s Watch

The Michigan Freedom Fund today demanded that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer formally disavow and distance herself from campaign attorney and former Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer, after revelations of serious campaign finance irregularities under Brewer’s leadership at MDP.

The Federal Election Commission today hit the Michigan Democratic Party with a $500,000 penalty for campaign finance irregularities – one of the largest ever levied – due to violations committed for years on Brewer’s watch.  Brewer took a formal role this January as Whitmer’s campaign attorney, and confirmed to the press at the end of May that he continued to work in that capacity.  It is unclear if Brewer continues to work in that capacity or if he has since been fired by Whitmer.

“Gretchen Whitmer owes voters an explanation for her decision to bring Mark Brewer onto her campaign given his disastrous record as Chairman at a Party playing fast and loose with campaign finance laws,” said Tony Daunt, Executive Director of the Michigan Freedom Fund.  “Campaign finance laws exist for a reason, and voters deserve candidates they can trust to obey them.  Given Brewer’s record and today’s groundbreaking FEC fine, it’s fair to wonder if Whitmer’s own campaign finance records are on the level.”
