We’ve Said It Before, We’ll Say It Again: Fire Them

DETROIT, MI, May 2, 2016 – The Michigan Freedom Fund today renewed its call on Detroit Public Schools and policymakers in Lansing to pursue every option to stand up to union bullies in Detroit, after teachers again walked out of their classrooms to flex their union muscles, leaving Detroit students at 94 of 97 District schools without their teachers and on the street.

Teacher strikes are illegal in Michigan. Teachers participating in illegal strikes are subject to disciplinary action, including fines and termination.

“We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again—It’s time for the District to put an end to these illegal strikes and terminate the union activists organizing them,” said Terri Reid, President of the Michigan Freedom Fund. “Kids in Detroit deserve teachers who are willing to put their students above union politics, not bullies who use children as political pawns.”

Detroit teachers union officials have repeatedly staged illegal strikes this school year, resulting in tens of thousands of students missing tens of thousands of days of cumulative classroom time.

Most of the illegal strikes have happened without advance notice to parents, locking children out of their classrooms and forcing many parents to miss work.
