Medicaid Work Requirement Bill Protects Michigan Taxpayers

Freedom Fund Applauds Senate Committee for Action on Shirkey Bill

LANSING, MI, April 18, 2018 –Michigan Freedom Fund Executive Director Tony Daunt today praised members of the state’s Michigan Competitiveness Committee for advancing a bill to protect Michigan taxpayers by requiring able bodied adults who receive government health insurance to fulfill basic work requirements.  Senate Bill 897, sponsored by state Sen. Mike Shirkey, requires those who can work to complete 29 hours of work, job training or education per week to qualify for Medicaid.

“Medicaid work requirements for able bodied adults will grow our economy, cut government spending, and protect Michigan taxpayers,” said Daunt.  “We applaud Senator Shirkey and committee members for their work on SB 897, and urge the full Senate to approve the bill as soon as possible.”
