Freedom Fund Calls on Whitmer to Donate Tainted Funds to Charity, Not Democrat Political Efforts
LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Freedom Fund today launched a new digital petition campaign asking Governor Gretchen Whitmer to donate millions of dollars in tainted campaign contributions to charities this holiday season, instead of campaign accounts that will benefit her own re-election campaign, and all Michigan Democrats. The online petition effort offers Michiganders the opportunity to weigh in on the scandal by asking the Governor to finally do the right thing.
Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson yesterday ordered Whitmer to “disgorge” millions of dollars in campaign contributions gathered above the legal limit. The Michigan Freedom Fund in July filed a formal campaign finance complaint against Gretchen Whitmer’s campaign committee for the brazenly illegal fundraising scheme.
Whitmer raised millions of dollars in excess of the state’s campaign finance laws and limits. The Democrat misleadingly claimed she was raising money to fight a recall campaign, but no recall campaign was ever actively undertaken against her.
Benson’s ruling allows Whitmer to disburse the excess campaign contributions either into charities that help the community or into political party campaign coffers used to benefit both Whitmer and Benson’s re-election campaigns. Whitmer spent last December claiming to make contributions to various Michigan charities and encouraging others to do the same but has not made a similar public push in 2021.
“Gretchen Whitmer made the biggest unethical campaign cash grab in Michigan history and even Jocelyn Benson says she’s not allowed to keep it,” said Tori Sachs, executive director of the Michigan Freedom Fund. “Gretchen Whitmer has a choice. She can use the tainted millions of dollars to prop up every Democrat campaign by giving the funds to their state party, or Whitmer could do the right thing and donate the money to charities that will help Michiganders devastated by her lockdown orders and botched handling of the COVID pandemic.”
A recent study from the Pew Charitable Trust showed that Michigan had the steepest decline in personal income under Governor Whitmer, dropping 9.5% from the second quarter of 2020 to the second quarter of 2021.
