Freedom Fund Releases New Ad Condemning School Closures On Whitmer’s Watch

It’s Time to Put Families In Charge of Education Funds

The Michigan Freedom Fund launched a new digital ad campaign condemning school closures on Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s watch, which have locked at least 95,000 students out of their classrooms, and called for education funds to be put in the hands of parents, so they can decide which school is right for their children.

Digital Ad: Whitmer’s Silence

With more than 95,000 Michigan students forced out of the classroom, Whitmer has refused to advocate for the reopening of schools for in-person education. Meanwhile, national leaders and health experts have vocally expressed that the best place for students is in school buildings.

“Gov. Whitmer vetoed scholarships that parents could have used to send their children to open schools and hire reading tutors,” said Tori Sachs, executive director of the Michigan Freedom Fund. “Now, at least 95,000 students are locked out of their classrooms on Gov. Whitmer’s watch. It’s time to put parents in charge of their kids’ education funds and let them decide which school is the best place for their kids to learn.”

Earlier this week The Detroit Free Press reported that “Michigan students of color are disproportionately affected by COVID-19 school closures. The Detroit News reports that “Parents of Ann Arbor Public Schools’ students with disabilities asked a federal judge Wednesday to stop Michigan schools from shifting to remote learning.”
